Bucksinpsired traineeships: work placements needed

3 July 2017

Bucksinspired traineeship programme is run by Bucks County Council Youth Service to provide education and training for young people. They are urgently looking for work experience placements.

Could you provide work-experience placements for trainees starting in September 2017? Bucksinspired logo

What is the bucksinspired traineeship programme?

Run by the Youth Service, this is an education and training programme with work experience that is focused on giving young people the skills and experience that employers are looking for.  The traineeships include:

  • A high-quality work experience placement with an employer, to provide real insight and experience into the world of work
  • Work preparation training delivered by Buckinghamshire County Council Youth Service
  • English and maths skills support from Buckinghamshire Adult Learning
  • Individual support from a youth worker throughout the programme

Who are traineeships for?

16 – 24 year olds who are motivated to work.  Some may be school leavers who need some practical work experience.  Others may have been unemployed for some time and could have low confidence as a result, of course this doesn’t mean they couldn’t be a valuable asset to an employer.

What’s in it for you as an employer?

  • Traineeships allow you to get ahead of the competition by bringing enthusiastic young people with their fresh ideas into your business before they get onto the job ladder
  • A trainee can provide extra support to your existing teams during busy periods
  • All traineeship costs are met by Government funding
  • Working with trainees will give established staff members the chance to develop their skills in mentoring and coaching young people
  • If you decide to offer a trainee an Apprenticeship you could be eligible for an Apprenticeship Grant for Employers of £1,500
  • Support for traineeships can form part of a business’s commitment to corporate social responsibility

If I offer a work experience placement what will be expected of me?

  • You will need to commit to offering a high-quality work experience placement, lasting for 8 weeks for 3 days per week
  • Provide a structured opportunity for the trainee, where they engage in purposeful learning activities rather than just observation
  • Trainees should receive coaching and training from an identified mentor in the business, receiving regular constructive feedback
  • Employers are not required to pay trainees but are encouraged to support with expenses such as transport and meals
  • You will be responsible for the welfare of the trainee whilst they are at your place of work, as you would for any employee.  You will therefore need employer’s liability insurance in place

Once the work experience placement with your company is finished, you will be required to offer:

  • Ideally an interview for a position within your business, if one is available
  • If no apprenticeship or job opportunity exists within your business, provide an exit interview together with meaningful written feedback to help the trainee to secure an apprenticeship or employment

If you think a trainee could be of benefit to your business and you would be keen to know more about potentially offering an opportunity to a young person please contact:
