If you are volunteering on a board or management committee, you are playing a key role in guiding and making decisions for your organisation. At Community Impact Bucks, we can help you do this by through our advice on a range of trustee-related issues for Buckinghamshire-based charities, community groups, and social enterprises.

To mark the start of Trustees’ Week 2024, we have selected a range of guidance, tools and training that address common trustee questions – whether you are new to the role or are an experienced trustee.

How can I bring about change?

For trustees looking to make a bigger impact, our one-to-one coaching and mentoring services can help you lead with confidence:

  • Coaching for Impact helps trustees develop leadership skills and navigate complex governance challenges. Working with a coach, you will get personalised guidance to improve decision-making, drive strategic change, and enhance overall board effectiveness. Learn more about our Coaching for Impact programme.
  • Mentoring for Success connects trustees with an experienced governance volunteer who can offer advice, share their experiences, and help trustees grow in confidence. Mentoring is particularly useful for trustees who are looking to refine their skills and enhance collaboration within their board. Find out more about our Mentoring for Success programme.

How can I recruit new trustees effectively?

Our Developing and advertising trustee roles webpage offers a variety of tools to help you identify the skills you need, create impactful trustee role descriptions, and find the best ways to advertise your vacancies including the Volunteer Bucks online platform.

How strong is my organisation’s governance?

Good governance is essential for a successful charity. To help you assess how your organisation is performing, we offer the Community Impact Bucks Healthcheck Tool. This free, online tool is quick and easy to use, providing a snapshot of your organisation’s strengths and areas for development. Access the Healthcheck Tool on our website.

How do I learn about the running of the organisation?

Your skills as at trustee – whether in finance, HR, or simply lived experience – are valuable to a local charity. However, you may not have experience of running an organisation. Have a look at our resources which cover all aspects of running a not-for-profit organisation in our Running your organisation webpages, including planning and strategy and day-to-day operations.
